There are "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.

This past week the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The White House declined to provide additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Background Context

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the war on the current front line.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, suggesting that halting hostilities would only amount to a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that involve the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the sole subject that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader recently occurred before reports that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he commented.
