Ahead of marking his six-year milestone at the helm, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is inextricably linked to winning major honors.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory within months. Yet, that first major trophy is still his sole major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.

“I can,” he stated in response to a query about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And numerous factors have to happen in the near future as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced just after his hiring was confirmed.

Present Challenges

With chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured over 100 injuries over the course of last season.

He is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that results must come sooner rather than later.

Earning the Right

He went on to explain, stressing the constant necessity to justify his role. “I think a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the players' commitment as most crucial. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”

Latest Fitness Blow

The team heads into the Everton match coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is anticipated to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Regardless of the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he initially took over.

He pointed to the squad's displays as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”

He finished by saying, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
