At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
