Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Widespread Extreme Heat Warnings Across Multiple States

This situation come after recent bushfires in another state, which resulted in the loss of homes and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have additionally been issued for later this week in parts of South Australia and NSW, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, bringing blazing heat to much of the region.

The mix of tinder-dry land and unbroken heat presents a dangerous situation for firefighters.

Global Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into darkness last week after powerful winds compromised the urban electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out power lines. The stormy weather also led to significant travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Severe impact on power systems is expected to cause ongoing problems as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to over 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Mist Covers Sunny Region

At the same time, a region known for its clear skies and abundant sunlight has endured one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on record. A particular form of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been unusually extensive and persistent this year, keeping temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged fog has been fuelled by unprecedented fall precipitation that left the ground saturated.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Holiday Islands

And in Spain, a weather system has ushered in heavy rainfall, strong winds and even snowfall to a set of islands – weather many would not connect with this popular holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unknown at higher ground, the storm brought some of the deepest accumulations in 2016 to a national park, compelling its temporary shutdown.

In addition to the snowfall, strong winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple islands. The effect of the storm is expected to ease this week with more seasonal weather taking hold.
