The British tennis star secured the most notable success of his career by coming back from a lost first set to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph represents Norrie's first ever success over a sitting world number one.

"Massive. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in history to defeat a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifiers here. I just tried to enjoy my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the most significant win of my career, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and probably the strongest athlete in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 consecutive elite tournament victories, which marked the finest stretch of performances in the young champion's young career.

Opposing him, Norrie presented his opponent minimal unforced errors, maintaining his consistency, physicality and power the entire contest while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to move into the court and strike effectively.

After struggling for months due to a significant arm issue and difficulties with his form, the tennis professional dropped as low as 91st in the rankings this year. Having reached the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 since then, this win reinforces the 30-year-old's progress as he attempts to make his way to the top 20 and even higher. Alcaraz, in spite of his incredible accomplishments, is yet to solve how to deliver his best tennis on indoor courts.
