A prominent Muslim civil rights association has accused the present government of a clear affront to freedom of expression” after federal border officials arrested British journalist Sami Hamdi this past Sunday.
The group stated that Hamdi was taken into custody at San Francisco airport for condemning Israel’s continuing military campaign in Gaza. The journalist is one of several individuals who have been detained and removed by immigration enforcement for expressing pro-Palestine opinions.
DHS officials said that the journalist’s visa had been canceled, and that he was in detention “awaiting deportation.”
ICE Holds British Journalist After Comments of Israel
British journalist Sami Hamdi was said to be detained over the weekend by border officials at a major US airport, and advocates asserts that action is clear punishment for the Islamic political commentator’s statements of Israeli actions while touring the United States.
An announcement from the organization described it was “a blatant affront to freedom of expression” to hold Hamdi for condemning the Israeli ongoing military campaign in the Gaza region while he was involved on a lecture series. Officials added in a different statement that Hamdi is facing deportation.
