Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
