Israelis mark two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks advance
Israelis have gathered across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of people killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to close the differences between the both parties.
Essential Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- Future administration of the area
Public Reaction
In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose sibling survived the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until all the hostages return no one will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.
Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says 48 continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise required for the captives to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, grieving people came together to honor the dead.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the dusk comes, the dread comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported two more fatalities had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the south, medical staff reported.
