New Year Revelers Urged to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Weather experts are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Despite Warnings
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to proceed, following last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be cold, so additional clothing essential, said forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- People have been urged to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are expected on the transport network.
The Mercury Expected to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Advisories Activated
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this meant the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
