Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Jail Diary Detailing Two Dozen Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a book in the coming weeks named Notes from a Cell, which recounts his experience served in jail.

This news was made shortly following the ex-leader left prison while he appeals his conviction on charges of criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to acquire political financing linked to the government of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he notes in one passage, implying the account centers around his reflections while in solitary confinement as opposed to wider commentary on the strained and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where noise is a lot to hear,” he continues. “The noise unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life is fortified while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, he participated via screen from inside the facility, describing his time inside as gruelling. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, easing this ordeal tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I didn’t expect at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s a trial I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It leaves a mark all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”

Unprecedented Situation

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, was the first ex-leader from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure from France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he had said he intended to spend the period to write a book.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear whether he had time to review and analyze the volumes he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, where an innocent man is imprisoned then breaks out to exact retribution.

Life in Confinement

He was placed in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet including private facilities at La Santé prison in Paris. Security personnel stayed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted only yoghurts during his stay due to concerns meals provided may have been contaminated. He had facilities for self-catering but refused this, based on unnamed sources. Not known is if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, informed the court his safety would improve outside jail compared to inside. “He received menacing messages, heard shouts at night and the urgent intervention next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Case Background

He entered custody last month after a Paris court gave him five years in prison on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to acquire election financing for his presidential bid.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case planned for next spring.
