The gravest possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a searing 4C increase in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in ocean levels. Another scenario foresees a plunge of 6C in temperature following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and energy needs.
Credible Outcomes, Not Forecasts
These effects, a number of which are linked to climate tipping points, are viewed as improbable but possible. The scientists stated that these models plugged a hole in forecasting that had left the UK not ready for catastrophic possibilities.
"The climate extremes we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," commented the lead researcher who oversaw the research. "The nation has been formulating policy lacking the tools to plan for catastrophic outcomes. We've now supplied planners what they need to prepare for future conditions they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."
A Suite of Extreme Weather Projections
Another collection of severe models sets out the possible scale of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These show that thermometer readings could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be triple normal levels.
The probability of the catastrophic events happening could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what action will be enacted to address climate change and how the planet's climate will react. This approach was described as similar to security threat evaluations or resilience checks for economic stability.

- Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if emissions cuts fails or if strong feedback loops such as the Amazon rainforest perishing unleash its enormous store of carbon. This would cause extreme and prolonged heatwaves and dry spells plaguing the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A key circulation system, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and water supplies would be drastically changed," explained Arnell.
- Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if polar ice in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, submerging low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this threat is already known by coastal engineers.
- Pollution Paradox: Temperatures could also be increased by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is sharply cut. This unexpected result occurs because aerosol particles from fossil fuel combustion block sunlight from warming the ground.

The study developed the extreme models using a mix of observed and historical experience, climate models and established principles. These outcomes omit international cascading effects such as the global food shortages and geopolitical instability.
The project was commissioned as part of a national climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have stated that too little consideration was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.
An independent advisory body has said that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and assess the threats for severe warming. Previous adaptation plans have been labeled being "inadequate" by some observers.
