An extensive 60-day voyage around Australia was terminated days after the fatal incident of an elderly lady who was abandoned by the vessel on a remote island.

The elderly woman had been walking on the tropical location with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the excursion for a rest. The vessel sailed away leaving her and returned later that day after the crew became aware the passenger was missing.

A major hunt discovered her person the following day.

Investigative bodies are examining the tragedy, in coordination with police and the medical examiner.

Head of the shipping company said that travelers and crew on the vessel were notified that the remainder of the voyage had been called off due to the "sad loss and previous mechanical issues".

In a statement, he added that guests would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to organize the homeward trips of the travelers via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also released an updated communication, and said they had "provided a order to the Master" preventing any additional guests from entering the liner.

The official said that they would visit the ship in the port city upon its return.

Timeline of Events

The liner initially left Cairns on 24 October, and was merely two days into the journey at the point of the 80-year-old's death. The tropical location was the initial destination on the itinerary.

Travelers on the ship - who usually pay tens of thousands of money to participate in the cruise - were taken there for a daily excursion with the possibility of hiking or snorkelling.

The child of the deceased woman said that her family was "stunned and distressed that the liner left the island after an organised excursion without my parent".

In her statement, she characterized her mum as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a participant of a walking club.

"According to scant facts we have been provided, it appears that there was a breakdown of responsibility and basic judgment," she said.

She further stated that she desired the examination would be able to determine what "the organization should have undertaken that might have preserved Mother's being".

"According to reports from the police that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and mother fell ill on the mountain ascent," she revealed.

"Officials suggested her to return, unescorted. Then the vessel left, seemingly without performing a roll call.

"At some stage in that sequence, or soon after, she succumbed, alone."

Company Response

Via official communication, the Head confirmed that the operator was "cooperating fully with investigators to assist their examination".

He said that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has occurred" and had provided its total backing to the family.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The ship caters for up to one hundred twenty travelers with 46 staff, according to company information. It was specially constructed to access remote locations of the Australian coast and is fitted with "tenders" - minor craft used to ferry passengers on day excursions.

Occurrences of this nature are rare, and cruise ships have procedures to document which travelers are boarding or getting off, according to travel authorities.

"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard just isn't an choice," a specialist stated.

Shipping companies regard these methods with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to avoid such incidents from occurring," the specialist further stated.

"This seems to be probably a stunning - and tragic - single occurrence."
