Nearly a week following the devastating hurricane struck western Jamaica with historic intensity, locals in affected areas by the shoreline are still desperately waiting for assistance.

Numerous thoroughfares are clogged with rubble and residents remain cut off with scarce supplies, no power or running water, and no idea of when normalcy will return.

Growing Fatalities

The government said on the weekend that a minimum of 28 persons in Jamaica have lost their lives following the hurricane's impact as a powerful maximum-level cyclone with winds reaching 185 mph.

This represents almost a 50% increase in the casualty count recently, and totals might grow as officials clear their way into new parts of the island in the near future.

Local Consequences

Concerning his cultivation area, he said: "Everything is destroyed. Total ruin resulted" But he quickly followed up with: "We need to appreciate being alive"

Global Support

At the same time, external support is commencing delivery into Jamaica.

American authorities declared that its Disaster Assistance Response Team had made entry. And countries including the UK have also promised significant monetary support and critical resources.
